The Shovel

by Todd Cheney — Read all 47 poems by Todd Cheney

Tuesday, September 9, 2003

It's used to feed the mouths

Of babes and cads and louts

It's used in feeding troughs

To hand the knowledge out

It's made of wood and metal

And found in gardens too

But really just a lever

To make them pay their dues

Let's put the bright up higher

And push the dim down low

For none deserve to prosper

Who cannot make a show

Of knowing things important

And how to add, divide

Sowing seeds of knowledge

And feeling dead inside
