My Baby's Keening Cry

I wrote this poem after receiving phone calls from my daughter regarding the violent deaths of her friends family members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut and Mother Emmanuel Church in South Carolina.

My Baby’s Keening Cry

I continue to hear my baby’s keening cry, why?

You’re calling to let me know your friend’s beautiful

little girl has died.

Why? She was massacred along with many children and adults

in an elementary school.

I remember her Mom’s warm smile, and, continue to see her

baby’s too.

You cry and cry!

Mommy, why did they have to die?

You call me again, and I hear my baby’s keening cry!

Mommy, my friend’s Aunty and cousin were massacred in

Mother Emmanuel’s Church!

Again, all I can feel are chills.

What hurts me even more, I can’t hold my baby, soothe

her cries, and make sense for both of us, “Why someone dies.”

Please God, “No more of my baby’s keening cries.”

I can’t rock my baby because she’s in the Northeast,

and I’m in the Southeast.

Don’t we deserve some semblance of peace?

As long as we engender hatred in people's minds, there will be tragic and terrible death caused by unreasoned thought processes. We have to get a handle on mental health or we will not stop the carnage.

. . . And we cry with you. Such senselessness, so difficult to understand. As Richard says below: We grope for words. Thank you for posting this tribute to the solitary cry multiplied a millionfold.

What a shocking day that was. I'm having trouble finding words to respond to this. All I can say is, thank you for sharing your heart here. Peace indeed. r
