Trains have rumbled through my hometown. My cousin and I would go to the crossing and wave to his dad who was an engineer! Fun days!! Living three miles from there now another line is close to my home. Love the inspiration you have expressed!
Those faraway places are still calling you. While most would not want to live within the sound of a train, you seem to be quite comfortable with the familiar and friendly sounds that trains have, something that few people know anymore. Wonderful poem.
It's interesting that there are salt mines in land on a great freshwater lake. It indicates that one time the sea was where you reside now.
Immediately brought back memories of the only poem from my girlfriend's copy of a Rod McKuen poetry collection that I remember, I believe entitled, "I Remember Trains."
We live close to the tracks, and I enjoy hearing those trains go by as they sound their horns approaching the street crossings in town.
A while back there was a steam engine that made several passes through town. Listening to that train whistle brought back many memories.
