This is so "right up my alley" Jane; it has been so since I was a child and my father showed me a bird's nest with eggs. He told me that we ought to be careful to disturb nothing since the parents could abandon the nest. I've always loved nature and it breaks my soul to witness what our species is doing to it. It is amazing how dedicated birds are to their young. They will rebuild the nest over and over and have multiple hatchlings during the summer. The tragic part is, even though they have many offspring, so few survive even the first year. But that is the way of nature and nature is always nurturing new life so that the saga can continue.
We've a robin's nest in the oak tree out front, I'm also waiting for the chirping to start. Several times a day I see her going to the nest. Seems like the same old bird comes year after year.
