Little Russian stacking dolls
Made of wood
One beneath the other looking
Just the same as each beneath it
Like a cozy family
Close just like they should
How long have they been together
Some long time
Got them at a yard sale they were
Sitting off no one had noticed
Lucky I did though as they
Only cost a dime

For some silly reason I thought of King Tutankhamun. When the boy king was buried, they enclosed his mummified body in a beautiful gold covered casket of his image fully dressed. They encased that casket with another with his image, fully dressed. And so on, for a total of seven caskets. Unfortunately, the last three or so did not have his likeness on them. While decorated, they were basically boxes. The last one was very large as I recall, looking more like a container that goes on many ships these days. But, they are much like your little Russian dolls.
What a bargain and clearly meant only for you. I once bought one of these dolls for my mother, many, many years ago (and not for a dime!) when I was travelling through Russia, in the old days, behind the Iron Curtain. Charming poem, for me, resurrecting lost memories. Thank you, Jane. John
