I respect the farmer.

Poem Artwork

Fields of wheat kissed by the sun
Waving as the breezes blow
Like a waltz bend to and fro
Calming sight when day is done

Cornstalks standing in their rows
Offering their plenteous gold
Off to stands for to be sold
Oft to fairs to win in shows

Hail to farmers who do toil
Day and night with sweat of brow
Pray that sun and rain allow
Seeds to sprout within the soil

I'd milk the chickens,
and slop the cow.
I'd never be a farmer,
no way, no plow.

Like my uncle, who toiled day and night for over 70 years on his small dairy farm and lived to be 101.5 always said, “I fill out all these forms like a major corporation only to make about $3000 a year.”

Unfortunately, in spite of Farm Aid and other efforts, the small family farm like his, now turned into a growing tree farm by his son and him, as well as a radio controlled free amusement park by his son, are mostly being sold to corporations who do not value the land as much as they value their annual profits.

Farmers, in addition to their toil, do worry about such things as dust and rain. There is a quiet beauty to your poem that fills the soul with the peace that honest work brings. John

They sure do need the rain and my hats off to all farmers for the tremendous job they do supplying us with food.
