When I think of all the milkweed I whacked and all the caterpillars like that that I killed as a stupid child it's a wonder that any survived!
But butterfly poetry like yours will float around the Internet forever.
There is good reason why this particular butterfly is the king, the Monarch of butterflies. The monarch's annual migration, just recently understood, is a marvel of nature. Roundup and other wonderful weed killers are decimating milkweed and thereby, endangering the monarch's migration paths and its very existence.
I've seen a few monarch doppelgängers/imitators around but I don't believe I've seen any real monarchs in our lantana. But right now, when those sweet flowers are so needed, our Lantana have quit blooming. I think it's because the plants are so old.
Monarchs are indeed beautiful insects. Unfortunately they are endangered. I haven't seen one yet this year. In fact I haven't seen too many butterflies , other than the cabbage butterflies, this year period. One thing though, butterflies spin a chrysalis, not a cocoon.
