I have had some very realistic dreams that have stuck with me through the day. Sometimes, that's not a party.

Poem Artwork

It's so dark out tonight
Full moon casts shadows deep
Quiet so thick a drape
Smothers me while I sleep

Did I bolt lock the door
Now that thought's in my head
Door knob's turning right now
No! Tonight I'll be dead

Woke up shaking with chills
Was that real or a dream
Better go check that door
Did I hear a board creak

Am I even awake
Or awake in a dream
It's so dark out tonight
Full moon casts shadows deep

SURE DOESN'T SOUND PRETTY BUT A GOOD PRAYER...A TALK WITH JESUS WILL BRING IN THE SWEET, REASSURING PRESENCE OF HIS LOVE AND WILL CHASE ALL OF THAT 'DARKNESS' AWAY! THANKS FOR SHARING, JANE...LOVE, BLESSINGS AND AN ABUNDANCE OF FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Certainly some dreadful thoughts in a dream. Are you sure you didn't do something back a while ago that might come back to haunt you? The sooner you get that cleared up, the sooner you'll get back the sleep of an innocent child.

Scary dreams I think are left overs from your brain surgery; blame the docs for giving you nightmares, maybe you can sue them...:) -e-

I call those kinds of "dreams" nightmares. I do not often have them and for that I am grateful. I do have intriguing dreams and some that, when I awaken, I go back to sleep and pick up the dream where I left it. Also, I have recurring dreams... ...like this one that inspired a short story that basically relates the whole dream experience.

Daddy’s Girl

Not too long ago, I had a dream. It was a dream where I was with this little girl; I assume she was my daughter. I already have a very fine son and two lovely and intelligent daughters so I do not know why I would have this intensely loving, protective, and proud feeling about having another; but that is certainly the way I felt.

In any event, in the dream in question, I find myself proudly parading this little girl (no specific name comes to mind but she is probably between four and six years old) around a town that seems oddly dated; like something out of the late 1800’s. We are holding hands and walking slowly down what I presume to be the main, and perhaps the only, street in town. People nod and smile in approval. The little girl is dressed as though we might be going to church or to a birthday party. She is wearing a pink dress, white stockings and white shoes. I feel this intense sense of pride and protectiveness.

(At this point in the dream, I awoke. I felt a great sense of loss and immediately willed myself back to sleep. As has happened to me before, I found myself back in the dream.)

The little girl and I are still walking slowly and eventually come to the end of the street and past this building that seems to be completely open to the street. I see a shop where my father is working. He nods and smiles. In what seems to be a family room, I sense a sibling but although I feel whom he might be (I have six in real life,) I cannot make him out so I am not sure how he feels. Then, in what appears to be the kitchen, I see my mother. She also nods and acknowledges our presence but just stands there.

(Dreams are much like movies sometimes. They use cinematographic techniques such as flashback and foreshadowing and time seems quite meaningless.)

The little girl and I are now on a high wooden platform with no railing. It is above railroad tracks. She is thrilled running back and forth and loves to hear the tapping sound of her shoes on the wooden boards. Suddenly, she seems to lose her balance and to my horror, I see that she is about to fall off the platform. It seems that I am too far away to catch her but just before the dream can become a nightmare, I am able to catch her and prevent her fall. I can feel the anguish, the fear, and the beating of my heart.

(Fade in a new scene.)

The little girl and I are now on the ground by the railroad tracks. There is a sense of happiness and peace again. We see an approaching train. It is old. It has a steam locomotive. People are leaning out the windows and waving at us. The little girl and I, still holding hands walk toward the train.

(That was the end of the dream. At this point, I woke up and it was actually time to get on with my day. I felt very good inside.)

PS: It is interesting to me that at no point in this dream is there any sign nor feeling of a mother in the picture at all. Again, this is odd since my children have a great mom with whom (although we are divorced), I remain friends.

The dream always makes me wonder on what marvellous and mysterious journey the little girl and I are about to embark upon.

This is a recurring dream.

Love, peace, and best wishes to you, Jane,

Regis.

I like this poem but it's scary. I know the feeling of not knowing if I'm awake or not. I hope you don't have any more dreams like this!

Those bad dreams,
can cause one to fret,
when you wake up from a nightmare,
and in a cold sweat.

Bad dreams and nightmares,
are never nice.
Better check the lock on that door,
and check it twice.

Jane ...

I like it ! Sometimes Darkness evokes Doubt in our minds.
Then the “Boogey Man” rears his ugly head. Causes me
pause sometimes also.

This piece calls to mind many old Halloween poems that I
penned years ago. Ghosts and Goblins, Dracula, Wolfman,
Frankenstein, The Grim Reaper... and other things that go
“Bump” in the night !

The word “Darkness” itself makes me think of the old TV series
“Dark Shadows” ... Creepy-Crawly Skin Crawling Heebie-Jeebies !

B O O !!!
