The Last Time
August 14, 2013
When was the last time
You said to yourself
“I’m going to go
Dig my toes in the wet sand
Dance while it’s raining
In the middle of the night
On a beach with nobody looking
And I don’t give a shit”?
When was the last time
You looked at the monarch butterfly
And thought about
Its metamorphosis four generations strong
On a predetermined journey to die
Never complaining
While you wallow in self pity
Saying the world is cold and brutal?
When was the last time
You realized you made those choices
For better, for worse, they were yours
And “freedom” is such an oft-used term
To tote one’s mere right just to exist
When in fact life itself
Is but a daily privilege
Given over and over again?
When was the last time
You wanted someone to blame
For the damned will of the human mind
Since, after all, how dare it know us
Running amok and shameless
Dashing through the hours
And speaking uncensored ugly truth
That only we can hear?
