You don't get over grief, you get through it. You learn to live with it, but it never leaves you.

The Branch with Two Red Leaves

Amongst the green of woods and brush and bramble
Lies a branch with two red leaves.
Illuminated against a backlit sky
It waits and assumes nothing.

A screeching owl descends
An impossible wingspan to outmatch its prey.
But he hits and misses
And the squirrel scurries off.
Bent but not unbowed
Is the branch with two red leaves.

I marvel at its strength
And wonder why it stays
True to time and season
And the bluejays love it so.

As I try to find you near me
I like to think you’re there
In the thorny resilience
Of the branch with two red leaves.

Perhaps someday we’ll understand
Why you left us all so soon.
But until the day we meet again
I’ll see you in the branch with two red leaves.

Wow! I wish I had written this; actually I feel as though I have... ...so similarily. I am not sure why but your verses speak to me as an echo, as though I'd written them myself. Most engaging and meaningful, Karen. Love, peace, and best wishes to you,

Regis. 🌺💛🍁

Those leaves seem to be out of season, but they are like your memory of loss. It does not change with the season, but is a considered reminder in the landscape of your thoughts.

I feel you are lamenting the loss of a loved one in this, but there is an element of mystery too that keeps the reader wondering what the writers true intent may be. There are many ways to use leaves symbolically. You've done that effectively here. And you're right. You don't get over grief. It becomes a part of you. It can also be a powerful motivator for a poet. It certainly has been for me over the years. You did well. Thank you for sharing. rlc
