I read the sign post, fifth and Main, One block over to old Broadway. Didn't matter, night or day, Crowds gathered in the usual way. Give a penny for all your thoughts, Or those you bumped into, on your walk. Life is vibrant on old Broadway, You can hear the buzz as they talk. New York, New York O what a town. The Bronx is up and the Battery down. The folks all ride in a hole in the ground- New York, New York, It's my home town.

To be born there, yes. If one has a fortune and wants to be at the center of finance and the arts, yes. As for me, I couldn't even afford the parking, let alone a studio flat to die in from rejection notices.

New York City has a certain glamour expressed in song, but a tragic underbelly of people ground-up while still in their youth and no place else to go.
