Oil is a scarce commodity, although the oil and gas companies would like you to think that it will last for as long as they can drill deeper and more in more previously off-limits land and offshore. Inflation of all commodities results in higher prices.
If you are writing about fuel oil for your furnace, unless your house is solar passive or highly insulated, you are out of luck. You could move south. You can convert to natural gas and still contribute to global warming. You can go to an electric system and put in solar panels to alleviate the pain of that cost. The time to do these things was when you were in your twenties, not now when you are on a fixed income and inflation is eating away at your resources.
If you writing about gasoline. Consider buying an electric car.
There's always walking or riding a bicycle. Or one can try bumming a ride with someone else. It has always amazed me that some people will drive miles out of their way just to save a few cents on a gal. of gas. In the end, it's not worth it.
