So I Would Have
I would have you happy,
I would hear you laugh;
And against your troubles, bravely declare:
"This will not last!"
We are born to suffer,
The philosophers say;
There will be an eternal night
To follow this too-short string of days.
Much is taken for the little we receive:
Friends, love, children...
The Path is narrow and short;
At the end, countless reasons to grieve.
What of that?
Flowers abound along our course!
Joy and Beauty among them;
And LOVE between what is bad
And what is worse.
So, I will say again:
In this brief moment on our winding, uphill path;
I would have you happy,
And I would have you laugh.
