The Straw That Broke the Camel's Back

After much deliberation

And due consideration

I found the clue

To what possessed you

You gotta ring ‘em on Monday

If you’ve something to say

And if they’re not in

Then remember your sins

I asked you where you’d been

You said, “Phone Jean.”

But that wasn’t the truth

It should have been Ruth

You’ve gotta ring ‘em on Monday

If you’ve something to say

And if they’re not in

Then remember your sins

It was late Monday night

When you turned out the lights

Someone’s stale perfume filled the air

Of course you didn’t care

You said:

“You gotta ring ‘em on Monday

If you’ve something to say

Or ring ‘em on Tuesday

Or late Wednesday.”

I’ve packed my bags now

To the tune of “Don’t be a silly cow.”

But when I said, ”Drop dead.”

You just dropped your head

And I said:

“You gotta ring ‘em on Monday

If you’ve something to say

Or ring ‘em on Tuesday

When the camel’s away.”

You went quiet and still

And looked pale and ill

You sat down on the bed

And turning to me you said;

“All this bloody phoning is costing me a fortune,”
