Another day has come and gone,
Drifted by like distant song
With lyrics I could barely hear
In the twilight of the year.
Now the moon has ridden high,
Watching as the time goes by
Like a dream that no one sees
As it floats above the trees.
And the trees that crowd my door
Cast long shadows across my floor,
Like ancient hermits those shadows moan
Against a wind that chills their bones.
Or twisted wanderers long insane
That scratch across my windowpane
With gnarled fingers ripe with age
But much too weak to show their rage.
I light a candle to give them strength
Or so I hope that’s what they’ll think,
All the phantoms my mind creates
When the moon is high and the hour late.
And I curse myself a fool
To fall back on some child’s tool
And give such credence to my fear
In the twilight of the year.

“Twilight”

sadness that you seem to have accepted as the norm.
Beautiful poem!
Powerful, wonderful rhythm. Purely excellent.
