Darkness has come ‘round once more,
My books lay forgotten where last I read
Them and I feel at odds with myself as I
Step outside into the star-shot night.
It is warmer of late but the wind holds
Promise of change as I zip up my coat
And the moon regards me as I regard
My car that sits brooding against the curb.
I tell myself not to think so much,
But my heart is restless and my soul
Cries out its torment as a shaky,
Barely heard laugh that
Echoes
Through
Nothingness…
Closing my eyes I breathe deep the night,
Conflicting scents of dead leaves, old straw
And something I can’t…quite…place,
Perhaps that promise of change.
Perhaps not.
But the night is my master now
And it beckons me to seek it out
As I find myself sitting behind the
Steering wheel of my car with no
Memory
Of
How…I…
…Got there…
No matter, I think, as the key slides home
And the eight cylinder roars into life beneath
The jet-black hood, no matter because the
Night is my master and I…must…seek…
I play no music as we part company with the curb,
This strange darkness is music enough, and I let
The headlights be my guide as they paint the road
Ahead of me, unmindful of what lies behind.
Driving, I am driving now, or am I driven?
A question I choose to ignore out of a fear
I do not understand and the night surrounds
Me, heedless in its totality.
