......

The smallest hours, between one and three am,

I hold my vigil here as a guardsman might do,

In far away places, peering out at an unfamiliar

Landscape fraught with unknown things.

Ah but I know the confines of this room quite well,

Though my thoughts are not always so easy to navigate,

And it is there that I post my guard, as I walk among

Them, a stranger even to myself on rough terrain.

Arm across a sleepless brow, eyes closed against

The familiar, shallow breaths marking time above

The ticking of a clock I cannot see, looking inward

At random recollections that move like sudden dancers.

Here, the watches of the night, feeling the weight of

Moonbeams as they explore my face and hair through

Half-lidded blinds that conceal six panes of glass laced

With intricate patterns of ice above a restless bed.

There, as I stand indecisive on an intangible borderline,

A marker few seldom know they have crossed, where

Thoughts become dreams, neither awake nor asleep, I

Do my balancing act, wondering which way I’ll fall.

Are you a night person too, George? I know I am. When I worked at the convenience store, midnight shift was my favorite. So quiet and peaceful. The perfect time to write and observe other night people.

I agree with Kate; you do have a gift of penning marvelous imagery in your poems, George. Write On!

Just love your meditative and reflective writes, George, that almost take us into your very heartbeat and breathing. You have a gift, I think, of stilling our thoughts so that we can picture the almost indiscernible and indescribable, painting beautiful sketches of what can be common experiences for many of us, and yet seldom seen and appreciated. I love the sparseness of this poem that indeed details so much of the inner landscape: truly poetic. TY Kate xx

Hi George, this is uncanny, I just wrote something on this topic. Of course not with your expertise! This is another fantastic write. I'll be back tomorrow;-)

I guess that has described me many times late at night when I underwent cancer treatment and the vigil that was held for me. Another great poem here.
