A shadow fell across my heart today, inexplicable
Darkness with no real source, its presence a physical
Thing that filled my mouth with a taste like salt as
A sorrow overtook me, an unaccounted for intruder
That seemed to linger just beyond the fringes of
Understanding, like a strange voice in another room.
What malady is this, to come upon me so? This
Intangible dweller from origins unknown that
Takes up residence here, to caress my thoughts
With bitter fascination, probing inward, a miner
Of bad intentions seeking out what I thought left
Behind, in the hidden places of my soul.
This stranger is not welcome here, yet still he
Comes, harbinger of tired eyes looking back
At me from a dusty mirror, hiding behind their
Hazel discontent, jangling random keys on a
Ring of memories in one ethereal hand, each
Key labeled, for doors best left closed.
So I turn away from that doppelganger, and sit
Before the only keys that matter, changing thoughts
Into words as I press each one in turn, forming my
Defenses and driving back the pain the only way
I know how, spelling to dispel, one line to the next
In a frenzy of self-release, a mystic kind of liberation.
Until the stranger takes his leave…
