Misconceptions

I used to be this way, but not so much anymore...most of the time lol.

Oblivion, an empty void that I once sought, but

Never knowing I already dwelled there, its source

Eluded me, my life disjointed and incomplete like

Gazing at my reflection in a shattered mirror that

Lies in pieces, splintered fragments that pierced my

Heart, a silent implosion of self-induced limitations.

And so I forged a suit of arms crafted from the

Essence of my own misconceptions, how I

Perceived myself perceived by others, and to

Guard against any who might try to make me

Think otherwise, lest they discover my greatest

Weakness, a malaise called Loneliness.

This armor I named Indifference, and I wore

It well beneath a grinning mask that I hoped

Would distract outsiders from the haunted eyes

Peering out from behind it, always watchful, yet

Rarely seeing beyond what my heart swore to be

True, whispered inadequacies of my own design.

Oblivious of who I really was.

When looking "inside," sometimes what's reflected back isn't that pretty. We hide from the "real world" with misconceptions and illusions, until we are ready for a leap of faith. That being humility... this is who I am... great write...

In many ways you also describe how I used to be too until I learned a lot of lessons from life.

I think many mortal souls have experienced similar feelings - and you pen them very well, George.

Ah, soooooo gooood!!!!! Clean, sparse and absolutely spot on in both mood and evocation! So often I feel like an eye peering back at both you and me from that shattered glass on the floor, George. And your voice could be mine, too - except I could never write this "cleanly" (girly thing, maybe??!). Sounds like we come from the same planet from deep space somewhere. But we're learning, right? At least, I am from you! Keeping for sure. TY Kate xx

once we look into the depths of our souls, the fragments begin to congeal and we are no longer oblivious to our totality ...

Oh how I love this admission, so beautifully written George!
Because it shows the progress you have made, and how well
you can now perceive things and thereby put them behind you
as you correct them.Kudo's!
