......

There is a dagger in my chest

The hilt of which protrudes from

Too many sleepless nights, blade

Serrated by spinning shadows tossed

From the ceiling fan overhead, dancing

Yes dancing in rhythm to flickering

Candlelight that ebbs in a widening

Pool of wax that is somehow akin

To a dying mans eye just before his

Essence finally winks out.

The dagger cuts a little deeper with every

Inhalation that I take, not of breath

But of memory, carving out my past

As it twitches and screams, the poisoned

Soil from which it grew oozing with

Redundancy in the wake of that rancid

Fruit, a blighted harvest that thrives by

Feeding on the one who allowed it to

Spread its roots, there, beneath the gaze

Of that dying mans eye.

A truly powerful 'edge' to this poem, George.

Makes the blood run cold and the sweat trickle down the back of the neck - even if you have never experienced such heart-constricting moments. Razor sharp and remorseless write, George, which speaks of the oppressive weight on the chest and almost coronary-like pain that can be physically felt, even through "just" the assault of an "old" memory. I shudder... every time, you take us there, and your powers of evocation are astounding. I don't mean to sound morbid here, but this makes me understand something of how it is that people have the desire to self-harm - when it is perhaps a way of "relieving" intense emotional pain. Excellent write, though heart-rending. Bless you, Kate xx

I absolutely love the throat-grabbing effect of this. The title is excellent for its content. SERRATED NIGHTS takes you where you really don't want to go but have no choice. I think many people can resonate with SERRATED NIGHTS. We're all going to be under the old man's eye eventually.

I'm getting freaked out by these strong images. You have brought me much too close to that eye.

Very good. It sounds like your "soul searching" is getting to the core. Humility awaits...
