......

One year ago, he thinks, one year

To the day and here I go again

Taking back what I can’t let go

Though sometimes he can almost

Believe otherwise, this troubled

Young man who has yet to remove

The engagement ring that matched

The one she had mailed back to him

On February 14th, 2004, and he found

It strange that he could not recall if it

Had been a rainy day like this one or

If it even really mattered, because

Deep inside, almost unacknowledged

In its now familiar existence there, a

Shadow had laid hold of him, spreading

Like a bad infection as each day crawled

Over the horizon into night, time and

Again, bleeding together, coalescing

So that he couldn’t really tell the

Difference anymore, that small

Band of gold on his finger a

Spiteful gleam of indifference that

Shone on nothing more than the

Empty void he had allowed it to create.

Outside, the rain continued to fall.

END

You have a way of making your feelings real to the reader. I agree, it is a gift, indeed.

You know this conjured up a memory for me and I agree with Eileen about how you keep improving.

George your ability to put into stunning words the hearts most intense feelings is the gift I saw in your very first write. How
you keep improving that gift is awesome. Whether this poignant piece is about you or not, the conveyance of such deep feelings is a true poetic accomplishment. Bravo! love and hugs on this valentine day, from you pal,Eileen

Dear George
How can I put words to the emotion you have evoked in me on reading this heartbreaking poem? I don't think I can do it justice with a few superlatives. All I can say is that you have effectively tapped right into my heart. I felt the pain along with you. I don't know if this is written from personal experience or not but either way, you have created something so authentic you've brought tears to my eyes.
Wishing you love and everlasting happiness

Some of us, have a hard time of letting go of pain and memories that no longer exist. Its who we are, its who we become. Writing about it, releases some of the hurt and shame. Someday, the ring will come off, and it will surrender, because it is powerless... great write

I think we are all guilty of creating empty voids in our lives at some point.

...A void that is no less real for the fact that it has been allowed to come into existance. This is sooo very powerful - almost like a Lord Of The Rings-type feeling, the control and symbolism of this ring. For me, the energy here is concentrated in the last 6 lines, from "that small band of gold...". All of the "story" is condensed with such impact in those words: especially as I think of you as the master of the "compressed" write. If this is the power of the ring ON, my breath is held in the power that might be unleashed through the ring coming OFF - if ever such a thing were thinkable. Can just sense the state of suspended animation in this "frozen" emotional state. Thank you for this, and bless you. This is a very "real"-feeling write. Again, the 50% or more of what is left unsaid is as - if not more - important than the elements you have chosen to reveal. I am in awe of your ability to analyse and be objective about your most painful and deep feelings - let alone your ability to articulate them. TY for the bravery of this. LOL Kate xx

Well penned George!!

This reminded me of a school play I played in called "The Ring"

Very serious play but I luaht so hard every time I had to say
"Cara Mia MY Love"....and the name of the boy and calling him "my Ferdinand my love"...that was too much for my silly mind!!

Thanks for this less funny read!!

Love Tinka
