I awoke to a world dressed in white, a
Fragile cloth ripped in places where
Trees poked through, bits of fabric
Clinging to frozen branches like the
Tattered hopes of dying men
And I felt a strangeness inside as I
Stood looking out, wondering if
Perhaps I had forgotten the beauty
Of what I saw, having seen it so
Often before, this snow that fell
As I slept, dreaming whatever it was
I dreamed beyond the fringes of conscience
Recollection, carried along by those inner
Currents that span the hidden places where
No compass could ever guide me, worlds
Unmapped in brooding seas of nonexistence
Whose waters run deep with alien possibilities
Beyond my grasp, where things unspoken thrash
And flounder, unfathomable intellects blinded
By their inability to ever reach the surface of
My waking, but linger in those deeps as I
Stand at my front door looking out at the
Tattered cloth of a mid-February snow, that
Strangeness twisting me from within, a
Feeling like something has been missed…
And so I shut the door.
