Just a blast from the past...

I pace my cage like some starving beast

Neglected by a silent telephone, heart

Weak, malnourished by the one person

Who once gave it sustenance but lost to

Me now, the cage I pace built within

That four-chambered room, walls breaking

With each passing minute, hairline fractures

Pumping crimson betrayals that hold these

Bars in place, a sentence imposed by her

Reckless indifference to broken promises

And my own inability to use the key that

Will swing the door open, a key tagged

“Reality”, its location hidden behind a

Photograph I look at often to break the

Silence of this confinement, eyes shifting

Between the image I hold, its wooden frame

Like a window to the past, then back to that

Deadened telephone, hope at war with despair

In a struggle waged from a four-chambered cell

As my vision blurs to match my better judgement.

END

Being caged like a pet bird, always content with the seeds given us... a life that is known, but is it really a "good" life... spreading wings, trying new things, maybe a failure or two... but eventually, no cage will hold you... great write

Explosive and heart-bursting, George. The pent-up anguish and frustration are palpable - like the furies without and the furies within. We alone have the key to our own happiness in that no-one else can either break those bars or put them into place: only the attitudes of our own heart can do that. But our reality is what shapes how and who we are and how we relate to the world: life IS subjective, irrespective of objective reality. I am phone-phobic; my heart leaps out of my head every time it utters so much as a ring... Love the analogy of the chambered heart as the prison cell. Excellent as always. TY Kate xx

Not all cages have bars. Very nicely expressed.

I agree with Karen and Eileen that being caged whether by real bars or pyschcological ones can be restricting. Another excellent post.

Amazing how one can be caged, in one sense, yet their talent explodes with freedom! This poem is awesome! I'm thankful you have the key to your imagery, it is unbound and always exceptional! Kudo's!

Out of the depths of despair, reality shines, opening the windows that lets in the fresh spring air and no longer hides the lost horizons.. A nice pensive write.

the cage I pace built within

I know this cage well, and this is an extremely well penned piece, George. I truly think we all have the key to the cage, but very often it's very difficult to find.
