How does a poet know their a poet? Who writes poems? Do flowers decide to bloom? Or crickets presume to sing? Do poets merely love words Or do words long for caress To fulfill their urgent mute destiny? Do questions make statements? Why else so easy to ask? If not life itself a question? And death? If not a question, an answer Or nearer truth than fact? And more exciting? Again, then What is a poet? 1977
