We must give up
In our hearts
What we fear to lose
If we would be free,
For all we have and are
Is on loan.
Perhaps, on my dying day.
There will come
A grand vision
That will reconcile
My life to me
or me to it--
To make it all right
That I have lived,
Though without,
In my view, permission--
Without sanction
And as it seemed to me,
A prisoner of life.
Then, perhaps,
I may look back
And say,
"Now I see
What I never saw before
And am confirmed."
All my years of yearning search
Perhaps will yield
At last breath
To YES.
