At what age
does simplicity
belong to our past,
forcibly packed away
along with the trainset
and the tattered rag doll?
I've yet to become
a plausible adult;
My mature appearance
convinces no-one
for they still recognise
the wide-eyed infant
dressed in the outsized clothes
that are yet to be grown into
But I'm not comfortable
in this skin:
inheriting the musty vestments
of thread-bare, grown-up
COMPLEX
thoughts and premise
does not suit me
This child prefers naked,
barefoot -
not squeezed into
others' old shoes
with their worn-out souls
Set me free to be
as old as the universe
and as young
as the new-born's gaze...
For looking therein
I see that
all meaning and wisdom
of life
I read once, that there is a tribe, cannot remember where, that believes that a newborn babbles and gurgles the language of God...since they are fresh from heavens door, and this tribe gives total attention and respection to a baby's coos. As we grow older we lost our ear for that language, and slip further away from the divine......I see that concept here in your words......yes I do agree, it does start from within......Beautiful write Kate. This is a subject I have written on myself in a poem called The Language of Heaven.

Kate, this poem gains momentum early and NEVER stops! incredible. I remember a poster I used to have when I was 12 or 13. It said, "The best things in life are free." and had a picture of a naked toddler rolling in the grass. Even by that young age, I was beginning to feel the restrictions of life, "clothes" that were all wrong for me. Hope you never lose this attitude. Terrific write. Dawn

This is truly outstanding work Kate, speaks volumes.
Excellent use of metaphor, Kate. Such vivid imagery and one I can relate to. Your second to last stanza is a stopper. I really appreciate the way you think. The day we stop craving that freedom, that flexibility of thought and action, when our spirit becomes rigid and we comform, we stop writing. Really loved this, particularly the way you got into it, and gradually took us to such poignant ending. Bravo!

the imagery and metaphor are superb ... you spirit does not allow itself to fit into obsolete concept ... it has grown up out of the old clothes of perspective, preferring the naked ambiance of meaning and wisdom ... the last three verses as well as the entire poem is just incredible ...
