W H Auden: "Words are for those with promises to keep"

RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT

Braided words banded round third fingers
have all but worn away,
thin-silent like today.

Watching together this cinema of seasky,
the billows of sailcloud that ferry our future,
mourned only by reproach-filled gulls.

Our sun has gone out in the palm of your hand;
clenched too tight its golden coin lost power:
chilled by your fear to invest,
wanting only to preserve -
to bottle good days and filter out the rain.

My purse now fills with silence;
payment has been made.
In my heart is poverty,
love's bank foreclosed.

Wine, too, turned to sand;
the bubbles in my glass gone flat.
Time, dry-heavy, trickles through,
measuring this hour of obsolescence.
Even the spirit-level bubble is still,
no more emotional ups and downs.

We turn no pages, forwards or back.
Nothing has ever been written down.
All there has been is a lingering fullstop.

Our sentence now at an end.

Kate,

This strikes so close to home--power in your words and pen bring the emptiness of ignorance vividly into the reader's heart and makes them sense what you're experiencing...thank you, a deep, profoundly felt write.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla. *I'VE MISSED YOU*

"...In my heart is poverty, love's bank foreclosed..." I could have written this myself years ago. So empty, heavy and cold the expression of feeling, it does seem real to your own experience. No re-write needed, Kate. As you have written here...relationships never end neatly...

Kate,

Engrossing imagery - very much brought to life by your skilled poetic hand ... first-rate; exceptional!!

Best always,

This is so well written, Kate, I think I could send it to my estranged husband. You describe perfectly. And yet, below, you say that you do not know this personally. If that is so, then you are marvelous for being able to grab the emotions so well and paint the twisting of the heart as clearly as you do. This is beautifully done.

Funny Kate, I always look at your work as exporatory, not that there isn't you in it, of course it has your character, but I don't think of the situations as being yours, but whatever you are delving into at the moment. Yet each one is very personal, and deeply drawn with excellent premise. Always superb reading!

Like the play on "sentence" and "right to silence." Would the lengthening limits allow more dialog or pleas for mercy?

Kate this speaks to me of passion that has reached a place of uncertainty. I look at it and see what I think is the greatest sin to lo ve and that is when it is to the point that it is just sort of taken for granted. Even the silly littel lovers quarrels dissappear and all that is left to hold it together are vows and the hopw that someday we will find our way back. A sad but knowing write Kate even if it isn't your own experience.

Kate, this is excellent and certainly tugs at the reader's emotions. It is sad. So many of us have been through this.

Bless you, Sherry, and thank you... I suppose I should be grateful that this at least reads with feeling: I am reading a lot of stuff at the moment, and am inspired by it, so this is not a personal write. It's quite different for me and experimental. I have bashed it out as a first draft, so it may reappear sometime in a "neater" fashion. You are so right, though: it is not feeling that hurts, but the lack of it. K xx

This is so sad, Kate, it tore at my heart an soul. The opposite of love is not hate, but indifference. Understand, though, for each door that closes, another will be opened. Excellent writing!
Take care,
Sherry
