We are in heatwave here - our 24hrs of summer has come! :))
SWEET DARKNESS
Night is an oily black skin,
soft as crushed velvet,
supple as warm silk,
tender as softened lace.
Stars are teethmarks
which puncture her surface,
sharp and gleaming with appetite.
The moon is the white of an eye,
flashing with intrigue,
glinting with the spark
of dancing constellations.
Between dusk and dawn
night unrolls her lush secrets,
as precious and mystical
as an old Persian rug.

Ok, me lovely Kate, this first line: "Night is an oily black skin," tossed me right off my chair. Silly me, since it just got better and better until finally I gave in to a need to sigh loudly and declare: WOW!
This is one of those perfectly metaphor-ed poems that sinks in, in layers. It's just on to the 2nd layer as I type. Of course, it's headed straight to the depths, where it will join some of your other magnificence. The stars as teethmarks, the moon as an eye...
We in AD read for many reasons, some not exactly poetry-inclined (ahem) but THIS... this is that needle in a haystack, the diamond in the ruff. The perfect poem. I'm keeping it, of course! It's my favorite for now. (smile) katy xoxoxox
Great write, Katydid. This is thick with nervous and sexual tension--it brings to mind "Cat On a Hot Tin Roof" for some reason. Your hot days there are sultry, no? Well that fits right in with the general feeling. I even read it in a southern accent...
I just love this one, Kate. It is so smooth and your images are amazing. I got sucked into your verses and was enwrapt in that beautiful night's sky.
Take care,
Sherry
Oh! This is so rich with texture, atmosphere, light and dark. Magnificant poem, Kate. One of your best. "teethmarks"---only you would be able to come up with something so creative. Just loved this!
OH as the angels have wings this is heavenly sweet Kate.

Great discriptions.
Have you noticed how it does not get pitch black at night?
