Now this IS bizarre; the two characters in this piece completely switched positions in the writing of this poem... weird, huh?! :)) K xx

GHOST WRITER

He sits opposite me,
leaning back from the desk
and into the chair;
elbows resting,
hands pressed prayer-like
lightly together,
touching only at spread finger-tips,
lightly brushing against his lips
back and forth, up and down.

With his long legs spread in tight jeans,
one foot is raised and resting lightly
across the other knee.

He stares right through me
and into vacant space,
lost in thought,
saying nothing.

Suddenly he lurches forward,
picks up a slowly burning cigarette,
and squinting takes a long, hard drag.

Leaning back again,
he picks up a piece of paper
and reads,
resting his head on his fingers
while the cigarette burns
in between.

It’s a while before he softly
exhales his thoughts
with the spent smoke from
his lungs.

By that time,
I have written down
everything
and the dissipating rings
are merely whispered question marks
asking: “Did you get that?”

“But of course”
my silence replies.

Hmmm...could we maybe be interested in film and the art of screenwriting? This immediatly came to mind, Kate. Give it a go(or have you done so?), I say you're a natural! Scene Two?

Kate,

Very creative. Life does seem to pass in a puff of smoke. One can only savor when inhaling it.

Mesmerizing! -- to put it mildly. I truly like the way you juxtapose the two personalities against one another - separate, yet... the same. Leads one to wonder where does reality end and fantasy begin. --Jeff

Sweet Kate as always you stimulate and manimpulate are minds and make them think as you unfurl each word. Your characters may reverse but they both come out as strong and moving though a little sureal.
Great write,]

This does turn around, Kate, but it makes it a wonderful poem. It causes the reader to see more clearly both people in the verses. Of course, both are always us, in one persona or another,(though I often don't recognize my characters as a bit of me for a very long time) but your tightly woven verses and vivid images brought both characters to life and gave both deep importance in the scenerio. I loved the image of the smoke, the hazy thought of it made everything so real yet so hazy. GREAT POEM!!!! For some reason this brought to mind the MC Escher print of the hand drawing the hand.
Take care,
Sherry
