This is really just an outpouring, inspired by Eileen's New Orleans Misty Memories write today - thank you, ETW! - and having been touched by Sherry's comment there. I am sorry if this is too forward-looking for the inexpressible grief that surrounds the "now". I mean no insensitivity. But this is a paradoxical response, perhaps: a hopeful lament - the work of a left-hander, as always! With love, thoughts and prayers. LOL K xx
DESTINY
Creaking and groaning,
like a ship breaking up,
the earth and her people
are rocked to the core,
unable to withstand this
mortal anguish.
Drowning in confusion,
we are lost amid the shuffling feet
of the burial procession;
deafened by the tolling of the solitary bell.
But in our hearts, the spirit of Orleans
resurrects its loose strains of blues;
notes, floating on a gentler breeze,
soothe the pounding swell
of the grief of many waters.
Grieve, mourn and wail
but jazz will prevail,
softening the ligaments
of the mother-heart’s hips,
easing the birth of the new
Miracle Child…
… The soul of Southern Music,
conceived in adversity,
honed through grace with strife,
was perhaps predestined for
such a time as this:
the best maybe yet to come,
having travelled harder,
longer, deeper, farther
It's my hometown and I looked forward from the first day of flooding despite having friends and family missing. Wonderful work as usual. ~~Nordette

No need to apologize for looking forward... it is there that the "up" stairway exists. What lies behind cannot be changed; what we do now and tomorrow is more than care... action, ideas, solutions are converging so we can hope, and it is within hope that the ultimate "upside" will be found.
Your references, Kate, to the music and "grace and strife" is an eloquent tribute to that marvelous city that is unmatched anywhere in this country. She shall rise again... thank you for knowing that. katy xox
Hope is what keeps our prayers alive. You have some
really beautiful lines in this inspiring write, this stanza
especially:
"But in our hearts, the spirit of Orleans
resurrects its loose strains of blues;
notes, floating on a gentler breeze,
soothe the pounding swell
of the grief of many waters."
Ah Kate, this is so deeply felt and poignant, deeply insightful and beautifully written,

Kate,
yes i agree that through this unreal pain and grief, perhaps the best of the blues is yet to be heard . I know for a fact that New Orleans well definitely rise again and I will try to keep reminding myself of that.
Excellent Write.

Your lines are amazing, Kate. I was particularly taken aback by these:
"But in our hearts, the spirit of Orleans
resurrects its loose strains of blues;
notes, floating on a gentler breeze,
soothe the pounding swell
of the grief of many waters"
The "Blues" were born of hardship and suffering, as you say, perhaps this was always meant to be the fated destiny of New Orleans. Blues will again rise from the suffering that we find today and the music will ring for us all once again.
Exceptional write, Kate filled with compassion, enlightenment and understanding.
Take care,
Sherry
As always your incredible grasp of subjects allows your brilliant mind to compose splendid /meaningful poetry! That my name is mentioned at all is an honor!I particularly love this stanza
Oh Sweet Kate as always you reach into your magic bag of words and find just the right things to say. Yes the music and the spirit will not die. It's good to be home and reading you again.
A well expressed write and yes there will be music once again in New Orleans for it came from their hearts and will always remain. For now we have to pull together and get this job of caring and saving people to a speedy conclusion.
