LIFE ON THE HIGH TRAPEZE

A swinging relationship;
years spent together and apart,
their life like breathing –
in and out,
to and fro.

All she knows of him
are his chalked hands,
reached down to catch her;
black wristbands bearing his scent,
male and strong.

All he knows of her
is her distant sparkly loveliness,
the sequined spotlight hovering
across yawning, protected space
while he does the maths, the timing
of their poised encounter.

They trust in her body – arcing under
like leaping dolphin symmetry –
and his judgement, his hands.

Each day the show;
weeks come and go.
She notices his palms more lined,
her tights more wrinkly…

All she ever wonders is
when will they share
the first fag of the day,
enjoying the intimate still point
of that early morning cough?

This is strong, I could feel from where the N (narrator) is coming from. A poem of existential struggles, presented with concrete images.

What a strange yet common relationship this is. They perform together, trust their lives to each other, spend the the bulk of their years together and don't know anything about each other. Unfortunately, many relationships are just like the one shared by these performers. Couples fly past one another never really taking the time to learn about their mates and in the end, it is really just about who will be the one to unemotionally walk away. What a wonderful write this is Kate! Your images are excellent and the story told with keen attention to detail.
Take care,
Sherry

a relationship that has its essence in a suspended state of knowing when to catch on and when to let go and when to accept the motion of its limbo ...

your descriptive and metaphoric energy is superb in this poem, kate ...

luv your recital on "sheer brilliance" the title reflects the quality of the poem ...

Kate this is one of the best forms of relationship comparisons I have seen in a long time. The long lifetime love affairs that wait forever to become what should have been from the start are the most painful to endure.I have known love like that and yes even to this day I often wonder will the swings someday bring us back together in one more fatal crash. Well done Sweet Kate.

Oh. I must be wrong. To me there is a sadness, like the clowns smile, yet with the honest tear.

All he knows of her

is her distant sparkly loveliness,

Clever and most intelligent metaphors my litte friend..

Enjoyed this fictional write. Yet you sure know the art of making the reader think about the subject in hand.

Posh and clever. HUH

Use the safety net always. He will catch her..

All she knows of him

are his chalked hands,

She's left in the agony of not knowing..

You best explain. Fag = cigarette!
