CONTENTS OF THE SEALED WHITE ENVELOPE

At the back of her dressing table drawer,
beneath layers of silk stockings,
bank notes and stubs of forties’ lipsticks,
you were concealed:
white powdered chalk,
soap flakes or ash.

Did you glide with her over petalled dancefloors?
Take the strain of the great weight of her life
with your bare hands?
Etch your name across
the scorched blackboard
of her soul?
Cleanse, renew
and purge her heart of pain?

In her garden, I scatter you lovingly
over evergreen flowerbeds,
grateful for the fruit you bore.

Dear Kate,

In my heart, I know that you did what was honourable, respectful and righteous. May the fruits of all our lives be cause for such gratefulness.

Love & Light,
Joseph

This one coincides with Susan K. de Vegeter's poem A Dream Returned today, about finding a dream up in the attic in an old trunk. Keepsakes and family heirlooms tie us in with the pain and the joy, both heartache and smile properfully fitting to be scattered in a flowerbed where the growth can start anew, Kate. Memories keep it alive for us, let us unseal the envelope and sprinkle the powders abundantly to refreshen our souls. Blessed Be.

Masterful poem Kate! Amazing how sometimes we are closer after death than we were during the life span...

Beautiful write, Kate. Isn't it amazing how that generation kept everything, such as old tubes of lipstick and power in compacts that were thirty years old. I kind of like the musty sweet drawer smells.
You are on my mind a lot these days. xxxoooo Janet

curios and artifacts of one's lifetime have a life of their own yet they are attached to those whose lives they've harbored and reveal the sentimental nature within us ... great write, Kate ...

This is so very mysterious to me as a reader.......
oh my
Did you open that envelope? Did you assume it's contents? Or did you already know.....either way, what you wrote leads me to believe that the contents of the draw as well as envelope were artifacts that left a positive vibe. Its good to know what produces joy in the ones we love..........because, it gives us a chance to share that joy.......as our own.

I think its time to clean out my own draws!!!
I don't want my family to have a kniption! lol

With these words, I believe that I know who you are.
I know that you are deeply caring; lovably, so
And I know that you must let writing bleed you of what
you must, and will, say about the beauty of death.
Finally, I know that you are willing to put your talent
to the satisfying task of creatiing unforgettable poetry.

The mystery of an envelope and the days gone by are speculation of
a past that you've been able to capture complete in verse. I thought about Lauren Bacall and Humphery Bogart when I read your poem . Quiet
thoughts complete in powdered dreams.

Oh Kate this is a beautiful poem but better yet a wonderful story of love. We do not need to know who or what is in that envelope, our own imaginations guided by your romantic suggestions develop the story as it would be in our own heartfelt imaginations. Not many poets can do this and you did it splenditly here. Thank you for sharing this special moment.
