Stay inside the lines, they said,
but I would press my coloured point hard
into printed sugar paper making dents,
producing scrubbings of wild blue hair and
green scribblings of sky.
My best efforts were all passed by
in favour of lightly shaded, perfect circle cheeks,
puff-pink and smiling like they should –
or preferred by neat brown ordered fences,
non-transgressing and unbroken.
Trees bled, suns lay in puddles and red moons
reversed out of fields of barley skies.
I could never not wobble over boundaries;
would never paint mother in geometry skirt
or box my houses neatly into squares.
Never to be an artist, perhaps my numbers
would all add up instead.
May you never be confined to the lines. I would gladly skip outside of them all with you, enjoying the barley skies, red moons and bleeding trees. That's one of the reasons you're such a brilliant poet. Your ability to think 'outside of the box' is something to be admired. The fact that you do it without the help of recreational drugs is quite amazing. lol

You, my dear friend Kate, add up to something very special.
And yes...the spoonful of sugar is available, as requested, any time.
I enjoyed this one immensely, even though I have thought of myself
as an artist for many years now.
My "ineptness," and to great degree, I might add...is Math!
you add up to c-squared brilliance, Kate. I LOVED this and it just makes me laugh, thinking of my own early challenges lurking in the heart and brain. Dawn

Your numbers add up this one was wonderful i always wanted to be gifted in the srts too.
You are just a creative nature and can't be boxed inside those squares. And thus your numbers will always add up! A witty, clever poem, loved it.

I've always colored outside the lines by choice! To hell with convention. Tradition didn't name the lavender crayon and the feather quill dips into the India ink well as well as the abacus taught me math. Love those old-fashioned counting bead devices where old and slow still beats out fast and electronic! You are a poetic artist, Kate...alpha, beta, and omega!
An artist after me own heart! She writes, she colors, she creates...and who would but a perfectionist appreciate these lines you've penned? I get out of the line and I go nutz! But, what the hey. Gotta learn to relaaaaaaaaaaax. Now math tenses me up, but not your delightful words! Good show. Very good.
Kate ...
You are so utterly unique. Your poetic voice is quite colorful and flavorful to the mental palate, and for this gift you should be very proud. Screw the lines! Keep the words!

If E=mc2 then c2=E/m????
I love how the poetic narrative talks to the reader in a personal kinda way.
Do you know how brilliant this is!!!
Hahaha. I had trouble with the lines too. My uncle, a trained artist and art professor at Southern University hated such instructions. He said it ruined children's creativity. I also had trouble with coloring evenly, the light pastels. Love this poem, Kate! LOL. Here's one to give you a headache, "Boolean Us". I didn't put it up here. It's over at MySpace. ~~Nordette
I am terrible at math too, don't know anything beyond basic addition, subtraction (though borrowing gives me the fits! ARRGGH!!), basic fractions, multiplication, dividing, and some percentages. As for algebra, conversions, trigonometry, forgiddaboudit!! ARGGGH!! I am allergic to math; I am breaking out in numbers!!! LOL
Very well done, Kate; you shine like the star you truly are! BRAVA!
(((HUGS))) and much love, your (math allergic) friend in America, Karen Lynn in Texas. :D
I can see a wild new comic book now, too! Please don't give up sketching.

"Never to be an artist, perhaps my numbers / would all add up instead." We are what we are supposed to be. I doubt Einstein was all that proficient with the oils and canvass either.
But you are!!! Coloring out of the lines makes you a true master who sought the answers to life away from the normal teachings. Your artistic
Muse is all in this pen. It is a masterpiece.

An apt confession; since you've never stayed within the lines, or conformed to rules of the game. This is quite apparent from where I read. And, for heavens sake, don't change! That would be disastrous, indeed... and dull as deeky feathers. I like the pace of this one, too You're that little girl, again.

Perhaps you were the born artist even then just looking for your perfect medium which you have obviously found in your writing. Very nice poem sweet Kate that supports a lot of us out here artists who could never confine ourselves to "staying within the lines" and I think looking back that was a good thing. Have a great day and talk to you soon I hope.

meticulously crafted ... no doubt, your numbers are in order ...
