SPINNING DIME

Was the cut so quick, so painless
that my skin forgot to bleed
that moment (I don’t know when)
some steel blade of light
severed my soul asunder
like parting the Red Sea?

Now life is a dry path
only passable through choice:
either upstream or down,
via night or by way of morning;
moving forwards or turning back.

But light travels in only one direction
and it’s constant flashing sword inflicts
the kindest bloodless wound,
separating soul from black.

Daily I walk, guided by its
ready-drawn glinting,
prepared for yet more surgery;

it appears like a spinning dime,
showing me how,
telling me which way – heads or tails,

every time it falls.

to me I see the spinning dime, waiting for the heads or tails upon which it lands

this poem probes into the essence of a wound that when heals, leaves no scar ... a wound cleansed by the spiritual light whose direction is absorbed by the source of its own origin ... it's self-infliction is guided by a higher force, left spinning until it decides to fall and when it does, it doesn't matter which side it lands up on, for it has completed its journey and has fallen upon itself ...

Thank you for all your empathetic and illuminating thoughts, Honies. But I am a little surprised by this particular response as I had intended this to be written from the POV of positivity, walking towards the light and all that. So it is good for me to understand that is not necessarily how it comes across. Funnily enough, I am known by my writing tutors to be somewhat masochistic when it comes to relishing criticism (not that I in any way see your comments as such, but of course!). So what I enjoy as healthy stripping away, perhaps others rather interpret as pain! :)) Bless you all for your heartfelt concern. Sorry if I "downed" you"! LOL Kate xx

Hi Kate. I know this feeling well and it is piercingly uncomfortable and at the same time like walking down a very long, very empty road toward a sort of guillotine (though spinning dime is a bit softer image :)) that will, like it or not, define the path we choose. Whether the intended meaning was that which I gleaned or not, this poem is intensely spiritual and will no doubt prick the reader whwere she is. be well by the sea, Dawn

(((Kate))),

This left me with vertigo: life spins and drags us into the vortex, leaving us crying out, 'No more!' But we buckle down, climb out, and triumph, again and again. I hope this happens to you. You are ever in my thoughts and prayers: a POWERFULLY penned write.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

These are words of a metaphoric master. The twists, turns and spins are believably spun into a dance reflecting a stage on life. Whether you intended it or not, the writer is recognizing that decision making is always there, but is suddenly aware that choice can be brutal, needing, either the best information to make it, or settle for a flippant toss of the coin. (My decision: stop here!)

This one has the quality for re-reading - to see how much sense it really makes. Your writing surely intrigues. TYL - Bill

Kate,

Perhaps one day that spinning dime will stop on edge. Then and only then shall we not have to decide.

I think we always have a choice which path to choose, dear Kate. We can follow our instincts, or flip that coin - but it's still our choice.

Stunning write my friend, life sometimes throws things at us that creates that spinning feeling, do I choose the left road or the right road...heads or tails. When difficult choices come my way I find that prayer helps me to choose the right road or the right side of the coin. Great write very thought provoking.

There are times when we do better to split the body and the spirit, some things just seem to make more sense that way. Certainly when healing our self, it is good to put the mind in the superior position and direct it to heal the flesh, but it is not easy to go about our days feeling fragmented or like a we are a beautiful puzzle with the one piece that explains our image, gone askew. Like the quick and precise cut of a laser we lose our wholeness and from that point forward, life takes on a much different dimension and our fate seems to, somehow, lie in the hands of another. Exceptional penning, Kate!
Take care,

The things of spirit always out rouse the flesh Dearest Kate........Red Sea parted could leave a well of living pools of flowing living waters... the adage of the spinning dime we used forever to decide what chore or whom is to win. I never thought of it as tails or heads till just now I knew it mattered if I had to lose or win but this brought such an awarness in your gifted wordage and pennmanship as always I am left in awe to this lesson and wisdom..... Indebted for the muse I have gained Dearest Sweet Kate!XX Lots Love, Thank you,

Sweet Kate, once again you dazzle your readers and fans with words of intense wisdom that allow us to chose our own interpretation of your work. I feel pain in this one but also an expression of strength that you can and will overcome any obstacle that comes your way, even the unexpected ones. You will toss the coin and make your decision but always move forward.

I have personally been in these places and seasons spiritually KB.

Going through them always created attrition between my flesh and spirit. It's not any fun! Whatever causes them - broken dreams, wayward children, bad choices, impulsiveness that creates emotional maelstroms - seems to become the catalyst that starts the wheels turning for a season of grinding down and sanding smooth those areas in our lives that are still unprepared or incomplete.

It seems to me that you are growing and stretching into places that you have never been before, almost as if you are in preparation for something greater than you've ever known.

I was always thankyou that the pendulum swung both ways. For me a time of refreshing always followed these battles.

Oh well, there are facts which only give us choices and every choice is a toss. This is sad, when it happens, and people can only advise but to face it requires strength and character. A very emotionally charged post, Kate. Is everything all right at your end?

A broken spirit maybe? But light also represents hope........so to me this is a mystery.......perhaps I am way off, I don't know, but your word usage is intelligent, and metaphorically visual
I like it
