INNER SANCTUM

A nearness so close it’s untouchable.

The silken sway of gills, opening
and shutting the blind buds of lungs,
billowing peace, infusing the blood
with reverie.

The lens of an eye stencilling shades,
tattooing mind’s monochrome
with spectra of splintered light.

Thoughts flick open and click shut
like a fan, turned by a key to that
secret, unknown place
never visited but always recognised.

A presence we call ”Home”.

This is an "Inner Sanctum" that, for this reader, could be divine presence itself, or communion with such a presence while yet within the temple of one's physical being. Much appreciation for such an exquisite reading experience.

A superb poem, it gave me the image of you writing inside a goldfish bowl;-) It is a very unique sense of "home"...Your poetry shows so much growth this past year Kate, It's a wonder you don't have your book out yet!

A feeling of the sea in engaging, beautiful lines, dear (((Kate))), I think I like Mr. Ed's comment most of all (even though I agree with all below who've stopped by your corner of the WWW). Are we creatures of the sea? I see another tropical vacation is in your thoughts...take me there with you!!!!!!! GORGEOUS, seamless perfection, your poetry; thank you! Your inner sanctum is a restful retreat, indeed.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Fascinating, it almost sounds like your inner sanctum is deep under the sea, Kate. Are you a Mermaid?

The lens of the eye is the envy of any camera and the constant changing of the aperture of the pupil...that is an hours long conversation in itself...the eye sees so much, that we cannot consciously absorb it all. Can you tell that I am fascinated by the fluctuations of the eye? When I was totally absorbed in photography and thought a camera just about the keenest thing on the planet, I happened to be looking up lens and stumbled upon info about the lens of the eye; now that, was an amazing lesson. Just how much of the consciously missed information is by desire and how much is simply sensory overload, remains to be learned, but there is much we overlook and much more we selectively sort out of our view. Your images are positively tangible and your message powerful and impacting. For such a short piece, you have packed quite a punch here, Kate. ...that place we know as home where every one of our senses recognizes all that we neglect to consciously gather, yet there is a familiar peace seems to consume us.

Take care,

Sherry

Lovely, kate. I'd say more but I've been writing all day about bombs, mail, and taxes. Ugh. Can you spell fatigue? :-) ~~Nordette

"A nearness so close it’s untouchable"~ yet I retreated to the words spoken...inhaling, infusing, interpreting the significance of the home within and our presence amid...
How majestic, in knowing...

the inner sanctum can also be known as a place we always visit but fail to recognize ... the lens of the eye is divided by our own interpretation of presence and that presence is the home we are lured to but feel like a stranger while dwelling within it ...

Too many things are happening in the stanzas 2 and 3; stanza 4 works perfect for me...The first and the last lines meld into each other. The fabulous images, and the incongruity between them make the read even more delicious.

The nonlinearities in this poem is very interesting, and the presence of the adjectives like "splintered light" make it rich.

A fantastic work, Kate!

Ah dear sweet Kate this is definatley one to make a soul think. The mind does have a way of capturing images that we can readily associate with home. A lovers arm around a shoulder, a cosy wood fire on a cold night, tinsel and ornamets at Christmas all things and much more that the brain subconsciouly stores and equates with eadh individual's comfort and solace place. Great work here and well written piece that is up to your high standards for sure.
