SPRING

Delicately nuzzling forwards,
not breaking rank,
sniffing air’s new stringent turn,

branches, nodding, advance slowly
like timid pregnant deer,
craning hoary soft-skinned antlers,
tentative horns fresh-velvetted green.

Shedding dull tweed of bramble winter,
they glide through wires,
leap over walls
and slip between close-boards of fences,
leaving pale bare behind.

Ghost of winter, past.

Kate, you continue to excel in probing the intricacies and delicacies of imagery and motif ... this poem coats the mind with spring's momentum while superimposing it's distant embrace ...

Now Kate, I'm connecting that "pale bare behind" and the "Ghost of winter past" and enjoying the connection immensely : )...how incredibly clever an end to the delicate images of sensory Spring. Even here in the sunny South, it's below freezing and thoughts of Spring are onn temporary hold. I'm glad you have a jump on the season. In my New England days, we were over run with deer and come Spring, there was nary a needle left on the Yew and buds a precious few. Oh to see this through your eyes! It just makes perfect sense.
Love and Hugs,
Taylor

A delightful harbinger of better days, told by that unique tale twisting lass of Old England. No place needs Spring more than does the land of the chilled Kate Burnside!
A delicious and tempting take on change of season. - Bill
