AN ACQUIRED TASTE
She is a connoisseur, knows every touch
of torrent and trickle, every taste
of stagnant pond or puddle,
every deep-earth effect of tsunami
as well as the slither of a single raindrop
down airborne, speckled panes.
The oceans she has cupped in her hands
and squeezed each evaporated teardrop
into iconic golden pails
to keep her glasshouse humid,
maintain the suppleness of her reptilian skin
and to swell her jungle juicy-sweet.
Now every source has been sucked dry
and the scorched burn of her soul
continues to char, craving still
a moister, bleeding drop
to soothe her blistered tongue,
coat her parched lips and to
re-hydrate her desiccated heart.
So she will dry herself like a desert wind,
fold herself crisp into pleats of a fan
or fire herself in kiln of earth’s core
for the chance to consume,
if only for one second,
the single bead still forming
on verdant hallowed brows.
so it is the voice I hear, the words blend in mind troubled by the world in which I live, not model created or the passsion presented but the truth lived by so many, your images and words make warm references a reporter with a poets heart. Enjoyed the write.. Walt
I've never read another soul that could write imagery better than you Kate. This is so very powerful. BTW you have a new bio pic you are so pretty, you remind me a bit of Audrey Hepburn!
Kate, weird serves you well in this incredible personification...I can feel "her" as she sucks the life out of the land and then greedily comes back for seconds before man can adjust and defend the firsts. I am parched in simply reading. How masterfully you tackle the tough ones always.

I continue to be sceptical about global warming - I see is as a non - event conjured up by ideologists with an agenda. The same ideology that claims there is an AIDs epidemic in Sth Africa. My nephew was a doctor in that country and despaired at the blatant lie that was being propogated for nothing more than extra funding from the UN.
There have been climactic and geological shifts for thousands of years. The old testament refers to seven years of famine, and the 18th century was the driest ever recorded. Stand at the top of Goat Fell on the Isle of Arran and you will see a galcier in the small basin of the neighbouring peak. With only 0.03 of our emmissions breaching the first layer of our protective stratosphere, most scientists - eg engineers, chemists, biologists, geologists etc - (armed with full research reports including the most recent UN commissioned, and not the prologue assumptions reported by an ignorant, scaremongering media)admit the impact on the atmosphere is practically nil.The protective shields beyond the first layer are simply too powerful to breach. Their job is essentially to protect us from harmful atoms etc entering our atmosphere.
It is not the superpowers - so called - that are the villains in polluting the world, indeed they are the most regulated. Rahter, it is the countries - Eastern European - accorded an environmental virtue that they do not deserve that are. But then, the ideology pursuing this agenda is by default anti-Western anyway. How do I know? I was involved with it - even arrested for it - for over 10 years - then I awoke.
Incidentally, a titled tongue is as equally biased as the untitled - to wit, Tony Benn (although he refused his peerage)

But my son walked through the door as I posted it, having attended a lecture given by Professor Sir John Houghton CBE, FRS, Chairman of Scientific Assessment for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, formerly Professor of Atmospheric Physics, University of Oxford and Director General and Chief Executive of the UK Met Office...
HE SAYS THAT IT WILL ONLY TAKE ONE PER CENT OF THE GLOBAL ECONOMY TO TURN THE WHOLE SITUATION AROUND - DOING IT PROPERLY AND NOT MESSING ABOUT WITH HALF-COCKED MEASURES.
Now THIS gives me hope, like nothing else. I had been sold into the idea that it is already too costly, too little, too late. BUT THIS IS STRAIGHT FROM THE HORSE'S MOUTH! Our SuperPowers have repressed and dissed all the scientific findings about climate change for years, but CAN and should be MADE to act. They are our elected representatives and should be forced to act concertedly to prevent this slide into devastation and disaster.
Of course, I have not heard it from my 17-yr-olds lips just WHAT "doing it properly" constitutes... But, hey!! Whatever it takes, right?
Praps I need to switch my computer off for starters... Thanks for listening and I hope this GOOD NEWS inspires you with hope like it has done me.

poetry that hits the heights that we can only marvel....
I think Mother is now truly tormented by our very callous Global Warming modern day life, and she truly needs our help to re-hydrate - but I fear it may already be too late.
As for the spots, many cases such as this now being reported near bogs.

I could read this many ways for me it has a spiritual reflection :) To me it is the Earth representing as the lost soul about to really unwind before that fire to earths core. Knowing all is lost. The Squelching heat in this is hot in the heavenlies I beleive he is moving over the Earth getting ready for a time with the Spirit. Visuals ghastly here and well done your poems always leave me in no
regret for having read them...
You seem to have captured the heart of Mother Nature, Mother Earth or some other diety who's very being is the strength and passion of the lust for life. Well done, sweet Kate, another scorcher of a write.
