George has been reading me Byron! A foray into classicism... LOL K xx
DEAD FLOWERS AT LOW TIDE
Washed-up on these mud-flat fields,
neither the marine sun has swollen
nor the salt-air leeched
these over-blown blooms:
These limp-petalled wings have
lost feathers’ flight and have
drowned upon the water,
not murdered in bloody, hate-filled battle
but kissed full-soft on their tight-lipped tips
and cast with sighs upon the waves
by lovers who,
detached from earthbound shores,
are forever launched on emotions’
briny seas.
The blackened, bloated features
soft-strewn here
speak of words that may, in time,
rot and fail like an ill-judged crop, barren
of love’s full harvest;
yet remain, like this picture,
firmly etched upon the mind
as faith-filled promises budding
within love’s sweet intent and cast
upon life’s inconstant waters.
oh kate, this last verse rings so very true! "...within love's sweet intent and cast upon life's inconstant waters..." simply sublime.
a superb write.
peace,
carolyn
freshly washed-up dead flowers, even in low tide still retain the fragrance of charm and the eloquence of color while waiting for the influence of the returning current to carry them away again and perhaps even resurrect their essence ...
wonderful poem, Kate ... nice contrast and deeply stimulating imagery and metaphor ...
"but kissed full-soft on their tight-lipped tips"...on my gosh...my tulips are blushing....sure signs of the universal oneness...love it
and this poem is now another of my many favorites...i enjoy how you empath
And quite a daring "foray into classicism" at that! How fortunate for me to have come upon this potent brew of strange beauty, ineluctable death, and the persistenct flow of life on this first day of National Poetry Month. Much gratitude for this and all the gems that spill so generously from your singular literary vision. May all the creative writing pens in your household be happily blessed by the energies of National Poetry Month.

You have outdone yourself, Kate! I like the way that you included the bad with the good...it's all part of the life cycle and we choose what we will take from it. Excellent!
Hi Kate - a beautiful gentle melancholy you have here - i am on an island without my books and so it was really lovely to read yours - enjoyed your poem - Nicky x

The life of Byron..Alway look on the bright side of life, de dum de dum de dum de dum....
A splendid allegory of life is this.
I can imagine you laying on the sofa,as a monocled George walks around the grand piano,(smoking jacket) reading to his mother dear... As she sips her pink champers...
Gosh... I love this poem. It really got my brain going in circles. Last stanza in particular. Love, promises, dreams we send across life's constantly changing tide. Ohhhh... Kate... you've got me thinking!!!!!!!!!!!
STrong edged and sharp scented images that draw the eyes to the shore but the mind to the heavens. Sweet Kate you wrapped love up in all the things around you on the waters of life and temper the blackness of the bad with the light of the good. Very nice indeed and a definate one to ponder long and slow over a glass of nice white wine.
There is powerful imagery and symbolism and thus, much meaning in your verses here, Kate. You have awakened my senses and my mind. Thank you for sharing this gift. Love and peace to you,
Considering all your excellent uses of the water and the ocean you have become, in my mind, the Lady of the Sea(e). I continue to enjoy the many ways you blend lives and the beauty and majesty of the ocean.
