WHITE OUT

Iceberg white of the cross-channel ferry
drifts against billowed shroud of sky;

wind-ruffled plumage of an albatross seascape –
migrating waves of blistering light –
advances on chalk of Old Harry’s Rocks

and the backlit shadow of my bleached-bone soul,
catching like snagged wool, is strewn across
white sands, white dog.

Not knowing whether I face
into brightness or away from it,
I am the vanishing point
on my own horizon.

Fabulous. Compliments from an old sea-dog. Love the images and the enigma of your thoughts. Is Harry Henry V?

Imagery is awesome. I felt the pull and tug, not too gentle, of the waves of heat to the disappearance at the end. Glad your still here to entrance me with more poems. Liz

i've just spent weeks in the American Rocky Mountains, areas more known for their winter splendor and i was often reminded of the "white out" conditions by the high snow fenses and road closure signs propped to the sidelines for the short summer...my mind flashed there as I read this, and upon reading of the albatrose, I could hear shore bird calls and I felt a meloncoly from this piece, and a windy sea air chill....i like to believe we are always facing the brightness :)

WOW...I have so missed reading you and I have so much saved to catch up on...this is a perfect example of why I will always love what you write. Oh the way only you can develop a theme. I can't decide whether I am chilled by the berg or warmed by the beach or fanned by the albatross in a mix somewhere in between. May I crawl into your mind for just one day to find out how you come to these fabulous creations of yours.
What a pleasure to be priveleged to your offerings again, Kate.
Love,
Taylor

Pretty scary situation at times, specially if you are on the edge of a precipe and don't even know it...I haven't experienced these since I came to Australia, though during my diving years, being tipped upside down by currents underwater, sure qualifies for Not knowing which way is up...LOL, till you check out your bubbles of the regulator.
Excellent write Kate, to describe a most precarious situation.
Ty and big hugs

As a crazy Canuck who lives in a white winter zone where white-outs are a common occurence I know the depth of this feeling. In a snowstorm white out nothing has form or definition..there is no up, no down, no left, no right only fear of being forever absorbed into this void of nothingnes. Sweet Kate though you could never be lost in white for your heart, radiates to the colours of the rainbow and we would always find you....
