I have read and reread Kate and have enjoyed every pass including the comments before mine. I don't find this claustrophobic at all, at least not in the first person. To me the close feelings come from those who sense the spirit...bound still to earth and man's patterned existance. The spirit soars free, like a breath of wind until the wind is met head on and blows that spirit who is lighter than the wind...moveable but not to be captured. The final question is a zinger and I don't have the answers, but you have certainly left me thinking...I'm just not quick enough...but give me time.
This is a fabulous simile, Kate...I wish it were mine.
I'm fascinated by this poem, Kate. I like your question and descriptions that put the reader in the place of this spirit. could feel the rush of wind and quickening heartbeats and some inner yearning to be considered "real". Dawn
Heaven is as contained to me
as its own reflection shimmering
on skins of water in a pail...
Gotta admit never thought of heaven quite like that before or seen it contained in a pail of water. Poets sure can shrink thinks in their vivid imaginations. Well done Kate. You reach down and always come up with winners.
Maybe you found yourself as the reflection of everything around you - The physical bones & walls cannot offer the illumination required by your receptors - So you created a unique sensory perception to refine your sense of beauty - And so you write -And so it goes -{ALL Love good} *Ted
Wow Sweet Kate, this is powerful mo jo, grips the readers attention wiht cold shivers down the spine from the very first line and by mid way you have us trembling until the holy water and crosses are dug out for the nightstand. A dynamite piece of writing, taking on the hereafter in style and grace (I know that is clichéd, but the hell with it, it works) that benefits the subject matter. The reader (me) gets an eerie. Poeish feeling as I float with the voice until I get to the last line where I come out of my trance and realize you have taken me on an unnatural (who sez?) trip . . . Last time I felt that was years ago after hitting a tab of acid . . . Gotta love it . . .
A further collection of poems, many from years in the Middle East, but also the California San Francisco and Central Coast areas (Santa Cruz, Carmel, Big Sur, Berkeley, etc.).
