“The trumpet ears of horses are my companions.
How could I forget you, warm funnels
twitching from right to left,
perfect for receiving confidences
and ferrying them to a safe place.”
Moniza Alvi from "Animal Faces"
The route to go’s the
cresting, troughing road
seen saddled between
the tufted ears of a horse’s
nodding head.
It’s leather creaks,
tightening for journey.
Safer than my past,
the future approaches
yet simultaneously drags
like a plough,
like the daily arc of the sun,
like a sack of belongings
behind me.
I have told my secret life
to him: my horse
who knows the way
and treads surefooted
upon the uprising dawn.
...an all knowing friend will carry you through most anything...and most anywhere. ...in listening...his ears perhaps reach for the stars of your wishes. So wonderful this life you give to words...trusting...poetic...and forward.
You had me smelling the leather reins and the scent of the horse by the second stanza, lol!! By the third, I heard the footsteps, and by the end I was wanting more of this quiet horse ride in the country of my dreams. Lovely stuff, Kate. xxxMichelle
The horse, the rider became one with the secret shared, parted slightly as the horse resumed his work of carrying the woman forward away from her secret to safety/. Love this poem. Liz
Like the mare I had years ago: She knew my moods at once when I sat her; confidences between friends. Appreciate and enjoyed the warmth of this poem, Kate. - Micke
This is another beautiful write of love that has caused pain that so hurts to share with fellow humans is too sad but yet...the unjudgemental ears of an animal can sometimes offer the calming affect that is required to make sense of an insane world. Very nicely done Sweet Kate.

Fabulous, Kate! I've had some experience with this, though let me tell you, I'm no equestrian-- if you could see me ride, you'd just shake your head in wonder, and mutter a perced-lipped, sympathetic "ooooo-- ouch" under your breath. But I digress...
Twenty years back, I took a packaged block of classes for field biology, geography, astronomy and religion. We hiked the Grand Canyon, hiked Arches, Bryce Canyon and Zion's Ntl Parks in S. Utah, and studied stars at the top of Mt. Washburn in Yellowstone-- and we spent two weeks going through Yellowstone by horseback-- saw the geysers few ever get to-- quite an amazing adventure.
And for all my bouncing around on that leather-squeaking saddle, I grew rather fond of those ears-- Paint knew all about my secret crush for that boy three horses ahead of me-- knew all about it, and sympathized too... God bless Paint, I say-- he wore me out-- but it was well worth the ride. --Charlie

Sometimes I have the strangest feeling that our animals, especially horses, have been given the unenviable job of absorbing our sorroows and easing our teoubles . . . Horses are majestic and rightfully skittish among strangers . . .
Under Amber Skies, written by author and poet Jill Eisnaugle, is a wonderful collection of rhyming poetry guaranteed to please every reader. In this, her second book, she writes of new friendships kindled, as well as old friendships solidified. She g
