... There will probably follow a trickle of thoughts that were squeezed from my pen during April's Poem A Day National challenge. Thanks for reading - back to reviewing soon! :)) Kate xx

THE MANY SHADES OF DARK

Too dark, when waiting
causes lost-limb pain.

Cellar-dark confusion that’s
the sudden cut of power to the brain.

Forbidden dark, writhing with secrets
and suspended animation.

Night-time dark couching the mind,
igniting stars of imagination.

Curtain-dark, privacy’s subtle shading
with its swags and tails to clutch.

Skin-dark, with its colourful array
and mysteries of hidden touch.

Eyes-shut dark, of surprise
and stimulated senses.

Tree-dark, the way ahead that’s sheltered
opening onto better places.

Twilight, when the world
slowly swells and bruises;

when unseen velvet tenderness
soothes away light’s harsh abuses.

Awesome write. You really sent a shiver down my back a bit with your sinister words. I enjoy the dark too from time to time. Too much sunshine like in August can really burn one out quickly. Thank you for sharing. Liz

Nice work Kate...at times even the darkness can be a refuge to escape or to find solitude of mind, when the realities of life become the unbearable so many of us can seek shelter within the darkness hoping to relieve the pains...

hope you had a great birthday vacation...

Best Wishes...

I've always wondered how the exact same situation...the very same thing...feels and looks so differently in the dark compared to the daylight...fears seem to lessen. Beautiful writing, Kate, as you show that darkness does not necessarily mean despair, but can bring beauty as well.

Kate, a profound write my friend. Darkness can bring us so much different pains, heartaches, and feelings, but when we see light in the distance we know we have survived and "we" will survive. Loved this.

Oh Sweet Kate, my dear this is absolutely lovely, you have captured so many shades of both colour and source of light. Dark is not just the absence of light but it is so many unique and varying shades that we can never capture all it's treasures and pleasures as well as the heartaches and teardrops that it often conceals. This is a beautiful work of art Kate...well done.

You made me see a new insight to darkness. I did not care for darkness before but your shadowed response to darkness is very well told. Good write and well thought out. Darkness does not take oveer me now but allows me to see the light.

contemplation of so much darkness...I wanna switch on a light. 'Tho, as your words reflect, it doesn't always work that way. I DO appreciate and especially enjoy the "Tree-dark..." lines!

So true Kate as our pain is like a dark cloud over us as we continue to look to the brighter side which is always lingering about. A great write and thank you for sharing.

...I have stood in shade before...and now your poetry distinguishes...just what type it was...perhaps shadow upon shadow in darkness...might not be believed...but you have given it truth Kate...and so wonderfully given light to dark...where it might never have been found.
brilliant...

When the blanket of the night sky soothes away the days pain we are left in a darkness to contemplate all that occurred and try to make sense of it. You clearly bring this out and yet by the light of dawn all is new again....

Be always safe,

This one has the delivery of subterfuge, the feel of Tarturus, the infernal regions of Hades, a place of punishment for the spirits of the wicked. One limb at a time, we heal from life's disease of deception - The Many Shades of Dark has Gothic undertones with killer roots that when "literary salt" poured to it, the roots are killed and new alliances surface with the Truth - where Light is seen anew. Be well you...

Love Always,
Sage
