HAPPY NEW YEAR, People! What exciting times ahead, I have little doubt. Just rousing myself after a family bout of the 'flu and a tucked-up Christmas, so here's wishing all things bigger, better and more hopeful in 2009: May it be divine, remembering, in the spirit of RL Stevenson, that "to travel hopefully is better than to arrive..." Stay safe and well. :)) xx
NEW YEAR’S EVolution
Are we spectres
within the hourglass,
slipping powerless
down transparent streams
towards the midnight sphincter?
Neither ghosts nor genies
without substance, we’re solid,
grain and texture uniquely fixed,
potential shining through.
Cast by clock-hands’ shadow,
moment by moment our seed
takes root, holds fast to
our becoming.
Such imagery Sweet Kate!
Speaking from a soul who knows
and shines bright....
I missed ya' and your glowing talents!
Hope your family and you are staying healthier!
Enjoy! a more enriching New Year ahead!

it's rally strange how i just glanced at a stone, i acquired many years ago that has enscripted in it "IMAGINE" just before i signed onto AD ... anyway, excellent poem ... solidity has its difficulties when living in a transitory realms ;)... have a safe & healthy year ahead, Kate ...
Each of your stanzas can stand alone-- and oddly enough, I think they're more powerful that way. Perhaps you could work them into a tanka series?
The first one: This is plumb-full of imagery. It creates a womping willow full of resolution boughs in my mind. Unanswered, this querry really haunts.
The second: Where the first is powerful, this one makes up for it in prettiness. I cannot read it and imagine myself gearing up for the anticipatory "midnight sphincter" up ahead. (I think you've created a new idiom). Instead, I see myself as a shiny grain of sand--perhaps to be melted into a stained glass, with sun shining through. Again, not nearly as powerful as the first, but very pretty just the same.
The third. I stumbled getting out of the sand imagery a bit, and had to read this one quite separately, but loved the movement in it. As a young lady, I sowed plenty of seed in a round field. Perhaps you're familiar with center pivots for irrigating. They're plentiful here in Idaho. The pump is at the center of the field, and the water is piped ten feet from the ground, with each jointed segment atached to tractor tires that rotate around the field clockwise--the outer segments traveling much faster than the more centrally located ones. It's a huge contraption, but makes for a perfect personal background to this stanza. So, in my mind, I can perfectly see my little seeds taking root, and "holding fast to my becoming"-- "moment by moment", just as you say.
Kate may your New Year be full of wonderous blessings and may your writings enrich many as you share them with others to read. We must hold onto our belief's to be a real person.
Thank you Kate for aharing your extraordinary poetry here at the Den! It is a gift to us! Best wishes to you and yours and may the year ahead,2009, be all you wish it to be!
.....A new way of looking at a new year, perhaps to make it that great one in which we do gently what has been forced and failed. Your words are worthy and gently laid upon us. Always like the twists in your work. - Bill
Thank you for sharing this timely and meaningful analogical offering, Kate. I extend to you my sincere best wishes for the new year ahead and for always. Love and blessings,
Love the way you look at the upcoming New Year and the world view in general in this write. I often wonder why we have such a fixation to seeing the old year out and the new one in...it will happen whether we are standing there at midnight staring at a clock or not. I like your idea of the seeds of tomorrow sprouting on this night so to speak. I do hope you and all those you love have a wonderful and successful New Years though sweet little Kate and looking forward to reading you in 2009.

Sorry to hear you were down with the flu--and on CHRISTMAS, too! BAH the Humbug!! Here's hoping you're feelin' TONS better, and that the new year is much kinder! (Somehow I doubt that will happen, but all we can do is pray! It's the right thing to do!!) Happy New Year; may 2009 be fine (for you)!

My God girl, the depth at which you write! The rest of us can only hope to one day get there. And if so, we'll stand proud as peacocks along side you! May 2009 be your best year yet and God bless :)

Hopefully, Kate, we will progress forward instead of being pinched by the midnight sphincter. :) Those that forget history are condemned to repeat it, it's often been said; believe it. An excellent write with startling imagery - and truth! Well done.

... sitting here reading it over a few times now, its striking.
'Are we spectres
within the hourglass,'
yes I wonder that, haunted by dreams... ;)
'slipping powerless
down transparent streams
towards the midnight sphincter?'
