Vital Sign

VITAL SIGN


With every beat of your heart
my wings take flight

and no matter whether
racing or dead slow,
my pulse responds to your rhythm,
pounding on the uphill climb
or settling in descent.

This, then, is my life’s course:

to live with my ear pressed
to the steady drum of us,
as to the tender pitter-pat
of April’s soft-fingered rain.

Through your peaks and
troughs of breathing,
my soul, dove-like,
learns to nest content.

I love that you brought the imagery of a dove into this poem...the analogy of a dove has so many wonderful connotations in this poem...peace, monogamy, mating for life, purity, spirituality... In this instance, all of these combine to bring forth a contented feeling and one that brings a smile to my face.

The sweet tender beauty of this write is so lovely and loving that I think it is one of your finest dear Kate, I love the the image it awakes of a soft head laying on a bare chest...relaxed, perhaps sated but for sure contented to be where it is. Nicely done indeed my sweet friend.

Once I read the poem, I went back to the title and thought that it was just perfect. Kate, if this poetic depiction is reality, then I would love to have some of that in my life! Such a lovely ending too.
