... Inspired by a line from an old Matchbox 20 song... dah de dah de dah.. "Be my saviour and I will be your downfall!"... Nice!! :)) xx

NEMESIS

Scissors, paper, stone…

You, Stone, are what
has tripped me,
Scissors;

blunted my blades,
been my downfall –
my well-oiled heart
now your cold-sculpted
epigraph.

Me, Scissors, would have
liked to be your
saviour;

to have carved you
into greatness –
perhaps a palace fountain
or a seventh Samson-pillar
in the temple of our god.

But you thought me Paper;
believed I’d smother
weathered smoothness
with my origami bones,

embellish your simplicity
with too many
doileyed words.

Paper, scissors, stone…

So, here we are then,
one, two, three:

crushed, cut, crumpled;
brought down, crumbled,
elevated;

still springing our
surprises,

but all wrapped up.

this is to be totally enjoyed Kate -- rich in imagination and creativity -- "all wrapped up", as it were, in your vernacular -- peace and love my friend -- Jon Michael

WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET...YOU CANNOT MAKE ONE OVER...THEY'LL TRIP YOU UP EVER TIME. IT USUALLY TURNS OUT AS IT DID...ONE, TWO, THREE MAKE AN INTERESTING...O N E. UNIQUE...THIS IS AN EXCELLENT WRITE WITH GREAT IMAGERY THAT WAS REALLY ENJOYED. THANKS FOR SHARING AND BLESSINGS. JOYCE

I'm with Crys... that's the best part of the poem. What if... you leave the first lead-in, but drop all stanzas but that one. I think it would be stronger. (Don't mind me though, because I have to admit that I love that "doileyed words" line too... --Char

'still springing our surprises,
but all wrapped up' great line, great pen, Kate!

I love the lines of origami bones...

This poem made me reflect upon the different friendships I have had that have petered out because of second guessing what their reactions or intentions are or were going to be...and the crushing, crumbling, cutting, crumpling surprises that eventually resulted in bringing down the friendship. If only all surprises elevated...as your poem does...neatly wrapped up in its own little package...

Great title! Got my attention and now I see what you wrote and am intrigued. I however am NOT going to tell you what a great writer you are, but rather, that you have the POTENT words and images to make it to the next level, but honestly Kate, you have to let go of your last inhibitions and let it flow even more...Nice start in the right direction though. Keep stepping toward the light!

Kate, no matter what the subject is, you write beautifully, and it never ceases to amaze me how diverse you are! I love how you expressed these emotions through a child's game...the metaphor is fantastic. And the ending...perfection!

scissors divide, paper records and stone consolidates the delicate strength of its creation ... being "wrapped up" is a present yet to be opened, yet it can also suggest the finality of uncovering its contents, which indeed would be a surprise for any "doileyed" savior ...
i luv the direction your take this poem through and the consequences of its conclusion ...

As always Kate your diversity never ceases to amaze me...from a simple song lyric to a reflection and introspection of life and lovers. I could never seem to win in that game...perhaps it was due to my always chosing paper and word over force and strength.
