... Hope you don't mind, Lori! :)) Bear with me... I had surgery last Friday and am still recuperating from the general anaesthetic (nothing too drastic, no worries!) Major complaint (apart from fatigue) right now is a bad throat owing to all the intubation - hence the associations I guess. But thanks, Lori, for getting my pen off it's sick bed... Hope to be back to normal (normal??!!) just asap. Kate xx
white-capped waves
rolling into themselves –
promises
Lori L Moore, 29.6.09.
WHITE-HORSE PROMISES
ceaseless cascade
of moon-ruffled waves,
silk-wrapped sheets
foetally-curled,
sshh-ing baby-soft whispers
tumbling heels over head;
souvenirs of some
satin-slippered night;
untucked shirt-tails
streaming the length
of ivory-slit envelopes
s.w.a.l.k.’d by valentines;
cloven-footed centaurs,
bronco-backed, foaming
in slow-mo stampede,
rearing Arab-esques
chafing bridle and bit…
I bite my lip. Sip,
savour, swallow;
savour, swallow, sip;
wade into readiness,
wallow in waiting…
As smooth stone placed
beneath parched tongue
slakes hot thirst,
waters sourceless mouth
on a dry and barren shore
so, too, pregnant promises
saturate the mind,
swell the silent throat with
their succulent suspense.

Reviews of "White-Horse Promises ( inspired by Lori Moore's Two Ku)"
You write exceptionally well under anesthesia, Kate. A thoroughly enticing poem, vivid imagery and vibrant language. Thank you as well for sharing Lori's haiku. It is brilliant and so is your poem. :-)
I see why her poem inspired you. Your imagery is fantastic. It seems to evolve throughout the poem. I saw those waves, and then there was a developing dry feel. Hope you recover well. Been there, this time last year with my back surgery. Hugs and happy 4th of July,
Sheila

So sorry to hear you were under. Literally. A scary feeling, but you wrap the throat and body in soothing lines (poetic sheets) of comfort. Well done, my friend. If you need anything, you let me know, 'hear?!?

This definitely reminded me of too many times of coming out of anesthesia...the parched throat and ice chips that really don't help anything at all...
Sorry to hear you have been under the weather. I hope you feel better soon. :~)
The last stanza brought to mind totally different images...ones of the longing and anticipation that slowly drive a person mad in waiting and waiting for the promise to finally be fulfilled...
