has four stiff legs
thrust high in the air
the dog in the dumpster’s
a chair
the dog in the dumpster
has squashed eyes
and a suede tongue
covered in goo
the dog in the dumpster’s
a shoe
the dog in the dumpster
thinks it’s an actress
its guts hanging out
all lolled to one side
it’s a mattress
the dog in the dumpster
has bared teeth
bald skin
and no bark
You made me smile... and also made me think about my 8 year old son who ran into the kitchen on Sunday, telling me he had found a castle in the clouds (and I, trying to be funny, said "Oh, you found a castle in the sky!" but he didn't get the joke...hee, hee...) And then he found a dragon and I told him he needed a knight, so he found one of those up there too. :~) If only shining knights were so easy to find... and all dogs in dumpsters brought smiles.
I really like this one, it's zany and creative...I hope you find your dog if he really is missing....

HAHAHAHAHAHA. This is the real Kate and her eccentric and funtastic humour. Shel Silverstein-esque. Write a kids book of poems in this genre. I love this.
I can picture this being read in a coffee shop, Kate. Everyone would be nodding with approval. It's, like John said, quirky, but also abstract. That first image of the dog with legs in the air caught my attention. By the time I got to the part about it flying around in your hair, I was smiling. That made me laugh. Well can't say that this is your best but...it does have some ironic and metaphoric possibilities. The reader does have the option of reading between the lines and seeing what his mind will tell him to believe are the different references. In fact...kind of liked this one. LOL
