THE SILENCED HEART OF THE GEISHA

Is that a petal of blossom on your face?
("No, it’s the last snowflake of winter.")

Is that a sliver of grey in your beard?
("No, it’s but the dalliant stroke
of a nubile young moon as she passes.")

Is this falsehood and fantasy that we speak?

-- No, it’s the reality of how things are,
but I wish it could be fiction

that I might forever hold
the spring bloom of your cheek
cupped in the bowl of my palm;

that I could keep years
wintered on your hoary head
clasped tight against my breast;

that even the man who is soon
to be Emperor could always belong
to one such as me.

Sounds like she's saddened by the way of things. I am, too, sometimes. An intimate perspective into this character, Kate. Nicely done. Hugs,
Sheila

Don't we have that face that protects us from the male gaze? Hides emotions, theatricalizes seduction, softens the edges of personality.

I feel that the heart of the Geisha is always silent, and in many cases, that is also what happens to the heart of women around the world.

Kate, there is mystery in her bowed head, beauty in her silent manner and love wishing to beam from beneath her sad, white cheeks --you have said those things so very gracefully, yet with great authority of expression my friend -- you have captured the tenderness of strength and abiding dedication -- may peace and love be always with you -- Jon Michael

Dear Kate, your poem on the whole is beautiful, but those last triple trios can stand on their own. Other than grey, no color is mentioned, and yet, I see it very vividly in "the spring bloom of your cheek" and "wintered on your hoary head". And the wording is very tender--palms cupping cheeks, bosom pillowing heads, and longing in forever and always, all with Kate Burnside's stylistically bold elegance. --a truly lovely write. --Charlie

Personal professional women of any world culture have always made their way through a refined artistry of falsehood and fantasy.

Regretfully, as with life in general, everything has its price. But that doesn't guarantee satisfaction.

This kind of poetic expression, of longing and sadness, requires delicacy of touch or it doesn't work but you, Kate, as we have come to know over and over have the touch and insight for such delicacy...and this is splendid.

The Geisha women were like delicate flowers and much sought after for their charms, be they future Emperors or not but they had hearts that needed love that seemed denied to them. Splendid insight comes through in this delicate poem.
