... As you might expect from me, a bit of Theatre Of The Absurd in that penultimate last line! :)) Now, where did I leave me glasses....??!!! xx

WHAT IS LOVE?

What is love but you
carrying me sleeping
safe in the crook
of your heart,

my dulcet mind the
soft-glow lamp
that lights your
blue whale dark,

the tidal seas of my
moon-lit breath surfing
the moods of your soul?

What is our love but an
absence of outward show,

an inner circus tent where
nightly we feast wide-eyed
on wonder’s sequined acrobats,

on tightrope-walking spectacles
and inventiveness of dreams.

My favorite stanza is the first. That is a perfect example of how I view the love of my husband because to me, love is also safety, and I feel safe in the crook of his arm/heart. It is just too hard to imagine someone hurting someone who they carry safe and sleeping... Thanks for the beautiful mental picture.

Kate, love at a level, from a view perhaps not considered by many. What you have exposed, expressed is the psycho-sensual plain too often summarily dismissed yet the vital roots of where secure love dwells most of the time. "an inner circus tent where, nightly we feast wide-eyed on wonder's sequined acrobats", the sensual. This work is unmistakably, Kate. And cherish it I do. May peace and love be always with you my dear friend. Jon Michael

Not only have you captured the essence of love between two people, but you have managed to articulate it - making it clear what love really is. Magnificent!

God bless you,

I love you--um um...what you write--yes, I love what you write. Kate this one is so perfect to me--very well written. I wish I could possess the words that my heart felt--spirit felt while falling all over yours.

Kate, You capture "love" in a very special way..Hey what's wrong with sequined acrobats, I probably designed them..lol
Anyway, I have this love deeply within my soul that cannot be touched but by only that "special" soul...I am still waiting for him to come to grips with destiny...So dreaming is my option at the moment just like you said inventiveness of dreams...that is a beautiful place for right now. I will find the patience and fortitude to hang in there, and wait for "love"...I LOVE This poem, it brings the tenderness out of me...xo :)

Peace, love and light,
Amber "V"

Excellent, evocative and inventive description of what could be love. I particularly liked the penultimate strophe. If this review is minimal assume that I don't have too many words; since I actually don't have. Speechless!

Gene's just written my review for me, Kate...this does make the heart stir...not too much, I pray, I'm still recovering from being alive yesterday.
"...safe in the crook.." and "...blue whale dark.." are beyond perfect
and those 'tightrope-walking spectacles' well, way to go!

Life should always be open to inventive ways even if it's only in our dreams. Could be surfing the waves of your mind coincides with what shrinks bring to bear when you lie on their couch but it would be a three ring circus to go any further.

You started so slow and dreamy, slowly escalating to the grace and fantasma of acrobats. It made me think of the excitement I felt from our anniversary, floating for days afterward. A wondrous write!
(whether fantasma is a word or not, I don't know, but it seems to fit!)
