... the Silent Night before the Happy New Year! :)) xx

WHEN WE ARE QUIET

I like my quiet with
room to breathe:

capacious like a stranger’s
offered jacket; trimmed
and softly swelling like
sheeted, luffing sails.

You like yours tight, dark
and preferably crowded:

the bar after-hours,
sweat-and-whisky fumed,
shushed by sudden shadows
of flash-torch, raiding police.

Silence goes about its
business, stealthy:

hungry as gathering storms;
empty as a bluebottle’s buzz

though its self-singing
hum’s as loaded as the
pollen-freighted bee’s.

So many forms of quiet. I love the outdoors frosty night type. Our home in the Mark Twain forest can be so quiet at night I find myself making noise for a sanity check. I guess that's a little sad isn't it? Patrick

I like the 'tight' bursts of imagery in this piece. Makes me feel like time is ticking by. And I love the memorable last line. Nicely done. Hugs,
Sheila

Mood shaped within the personal form of quiet we arrange to reflect not with regrets, but with the gusto of promise. We each snuggle in our own renditions of psychological comfort, in accord with the soul. When you are quiet, you scribe the most wonderful expressions Kate. I bid you love and peace my dear friend. I like my quiet with room to breathe too and I get as hungry as the gathering storms, but I am not at all empty like the bluebottle buz. It is amazing how this poem talks of life's solitude but can be applied to other life situations. Thank you for sharing, Kate.

May the Lord Jesus bless you, and those who you love, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your little sister, Barbie

To me this poem is about living in the present moment. The hush, the silence is where you can hear everything. I was at a cafe this morning and I flushed out all the junk from my mind and just listened to everyone around me..It was quite fascinating to be a part of each one's conversation quietly and unabtrusively listening.
You can learn so much from the sounds of silence.

Have a toast with me on New Year's Eve, to a bright and happy New Year!!!

Love you, and your spirit,
Amber

Muting out all the mundane and ringing in loud and clear all the new possibilities Kate...Silence is Golden...if I may, I'm tip-toeing across your floor with Earl Grey in hand and orange slices dripping with when we are quiet juiciness...let's sit for a spell and reminisce of where we have been and where we are going. Your company next to mine all of these years here on AD, but especially this year has been a sisterly comfort and I am in appreciation Kate. Happy New Year!

Love,
Sage

This is something rare, like about the ego versus the higher self. For me, your poems always find the deepest places. This is about the kind of silence that is raw material for transformation, for revelation.
Blessings to you for the New Year Kate ~

Love the metaphors. Thanks for adding that wonderful word Luffing to my crowded vocabulary but everyday finding room for new ones. Being a sea lover I shall try using it in a sea poem when the inspiration dawns on me. And that ending is pure Kate. Marvelous in construction and thought.

Hugs,
George
